Edward Smith

Edward Michael Smith was born on April 11, 1980 at St. Clare's Hospital in St. John's. He grew up in Dunville with his mother Phyllis, father Edward, and two brothers - Peter and Allan. He went to St. Anne's Academy from kindergarten to grade ten. He then finished his high school education at Laval High, Placentia.

Edward was surrounded by music all his life and began taking piano lessons from Mrs. Elizabeth Russo. Later he took lessons from Mr. Billy Houlihan, who Edward credits with sparking his interest in jazz. Throughout school, Edward took part in numerous variety shows.

Though the piano was his first instrument, he didn't stop there. He went on to learn classical guitar, guitar, and bass. He formed a band, called Neutral with his friends and played many gigs at local bars. The band members included: Gary Foley ( rhythm guitar), Scott Greene (lead guitar), and John Browne (drums- later replaced by Barry Dier).

Music was not his only interest. He appeared in the play "Faces of Fort Royal" , performed at Castle Hill.

Edward now attends St. Francis Xavier University, in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. He is majoring in jazz piano and will graduate May 5, 2002. On February 8, 2002, he played his fourth-year recital, which  included two original compositions and three non-original compositions.

This summer, after graduation, Edward plans to study sight reading. He is also considering auditioning for a gig on a cruise ship.
