Reg White: Talented Musician and Athlete
By: Cheryl White

Reg
White of Freshwater is a talented musician who plays both acoustic
and electric guitar, and bass guitar. He began playing guitar at age
17, and bass guitar around age 25. He is self-taught on both
instruments. Although music is just a hobby for him, he has played in
several bands over the years. He joined his first band at age 21,
which was called Country
Gentlemen.
He was also in Shadow,
Paradise Sound, Night Shift,
and Side
By Side.
In addition to playing guitar and bass guitar, he also sang and
wrote his own songs.
He played in bands from 1972 to 1990. He played just about every weekend either in the local area or out around Branch, St. Bride's, and Colinet. He is not currently in a band, but he still enjoys playing guitar in his spare time. He has been a musician for over 30 years, and his favorite kinds of music to play are country and rock.
Music,
however, is not his only strong point. He started martial arts
training in 1974, and he has a second-degree black belt in Shotokan
karate. In 1985 he was asked to participate in a weekend of rigorous
training and several hours of questioning by a sports psychologist to
see if he would make the Canadian National Karate Team. He spent the
weekend at a training camp working out twelve hours a day. He didn't
make the team but enjoyed the experience very much.
He
still practices martial arts at least five days a week. He was a
karate instructor for about twenty years, until 1996 when his job
made it difficult to have regular classes.
