The present day Placentia Volunteer Fire Department is the result of Amalgamation of the towns of Placentia, Jerseyside , Freshwater and Dunville on January 1, 1994. On that day the three former volunteer fire departments amalgamated to from a united fire service to serve a much bigger single municipality. Fire Protection and prevention services are now delivered by a well equipped and highly trained fire department consisting of 37 firefighters utilizing 6 pieces of modern fire apparatus operating from three fire stations. A study is currently underway to determine the feasibility of centralizing services to better service the needs of our community.

The department has a very active Fire Prevention Program and has adopted the Learn Not To Burn Program in cooperation with St. Anne's Academy and St. Edwards Elementary. This is a program which introduces students from K to Grade 3 to fire Prevention utilizing Sparky the fire dog and the Fire Safety House along with the assistance of firefighters in the classroom.

Firefighters are called upon to respond to a multitude of calls ranging from chimney fires to Motor Vehicle Accidents. Fire and Emergency response average approximately 85 per year. The departments 3 pumper trucks , 1 rescue truck, 1 mobile command unit and a pick up utility unit, carry an array of equipment including the Jaws Of Life, high pressure Air Bags, Foam and related firefighting equipment to respond to these calls. The department is not responsible for medical calls but will assist the local ambulance service when called. The department has 3 paramedics, and 4 Emergency Medical Responders who work for the local Ambulance Service. Training in the department is completed utilizing the NFPA 1001 and fire officer programs. 14 members are certified from firefighter 1 to fire officer 11, with others presently involved in certification.

The fire department participates in all community activities including the Santa Claus Parade, Canada Day Celebrations, winter carnival, Remembrance Day Ceremonies, to mention a few ,and sponsors a fund raiser for Muscular Dystrophy with the annual Fire Truck Pull Competition against the Placentia-Withbourne RCMP . The department is very fortunate to have a very active Ladies Auxiliary who support the department with fundraising and assistance at emergency calls.
