Geography
of the Placentia Area
Location
: Placentia and
its surrounding communities are located on the Southwest corner of
the Avalon Peninsula, in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Placentia is approximately 131 kilometers southwest of the City of
St. John's and 885 kilometers southeast of Port-aux Basques via Route
100 on the Trans Canada Highway. Placentia can also be accessed via
the Nova Scotia / Newfoundland ferry which sails from North Sydney,
Nova Scotia to Argentia in the Summer months.

Physical
Features :
Placentia and its surrounding communities have a wide
variety of physical features including high hills, valleys, flat
lands, long arms and rivers, ponds, deep water ice free ports (
Argentia ), sheltered harbours, high forest areas, beaches, narrow
and winding roads, sea - level and above sea level communities, and
of course the Placentia Gut, which separates the Jerseyside from
Placentia.
Time Zone
:
The time zone here in Placentia is of course
Newfoundland Standard Time which is three hours and 30 minutes behind
Greenwich and 30 minutes ahead of the Maritime Provinces (Atlantic
Standard Time ) Clocks are advanced one hour from the first Sunday in
April to the last Sunday in October.
Climate
:
The Placentia area has a temperate maritime climate. Winters are
usually mild with a normal temperature of 0 degrees Celsius. Summer
days range from cool to hot with a normal temperature of 16 degrees
Celsius. The normal annual rainfall is 1201.6 mm and the normal
annual snowfall is 171.0mm. The following table outlines the weather

The population at last count for the Placentia and
area stood at approximately 5,900, with the majority living within
