Mrs. Eileen Houlihan |
Mrs. Eileen (Hunt) Houlihan was born in Argentia, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, on December 11, 1909. She grew up there and attended school in nearby Marquise. Upon completing her education, she taught school in Argentia for fourteen years.
As a result of the establishing of the Argentia Naval Station, she resettled to Freshwater, Placentia Bay in 1942, where she taught school for one year. There, in 1944, she married Bill Houlihan. They had two children, William and Moira, and later five grandchildren.
Her family memoir, Our Story, was published in 1991 by the Centre for Newfoundland Studies, Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Mrs. Houlihan's book, Uprooted! The Argentia Story gives a very rich and informative story of the move from Argentia to Freshwater and has proven to be an invaluable source of information for those doing research on the topic. In particular, it has been very helpful to the students of Laval High School in creating this Web Site.
Both Mrs. Eileen Houlihan and her husband Bill now deceased.
